Bradley Warner

Bradley Warner was a hero of the Unified Republic of Stars, winning acclaim for his actions in both the First and Second Republican Defensives as well as the Battle for the Republic under the leadership of his brother, famed NOVA master Stewart Todd "Dutch" Warner. He later became Admiral of the Second Fleet before retiring to a quiet life in the Galilean town of Rushing Bend where he became an author of some some note. He died in 2234, having lived through the end of the colonial period and the formation of the Republic.

Early Life

Like his older brother, the famed smuggler and later NOVA master Stewart Todd "Dutch" Warner, Bradley was born on Earth in the state of New Hampshire in in 2138 before his father relocated the family to Galileo City on Galileo within the then Colonial Star Cluster just two years later. There, he and his brother grew up with the other children of the city, attending baseball games and playing in the creeks that run between the streets. Like future president Ivan Boldyrev, Bradley also attended the New Literature & Sciences Day School, a private school his father sent he and his siblings to.[1]

Unlike his brother, Bradley excelled at school and, in 2156, he enrolled at the University of Galileo in New Chicago. He finished his studies in history and English in four short years and soon after enlisted in the United States Army back on Earth, passing through Officer Candidates School and achieving the rank of lieutenant. For the next four years, he served but it was also during this time that he began to question the allegiance he and his father held to the human home world and the nation of the United States as a whole.

It was also during this time that the UN began to pass various resolutions on the colonies, including the Stamp Act of 2162 tax and the appointment of Planetary Governors to each world. Additionally, with the colonies frustrated at Earth control, more than a few newspapers began to reflect the chatter among the people about the possibility of independence. In a hope to stem the flow of such talk, the UN passed a resolution forbidding such talk.

The final straw however, was the UN vote granting it military power to enforce its resolutions within the Colonial Star Cluster. As an infantry officer, Bradley saw the very likely possibility that he would soon be ordered to march on people exactly like him. So, in 2164, Bradley Warner resigned his commission and returned to Galileo.

Republican Defensives

While Bradley may have had a change of heart about serving in the United States Army, he also had little interest initially in taking part in any of the talk of independence. Instead, he settled into a new job as a newspaper editor, covering sports for the Galileo Herald in Galileo City. But just a year later, events transpired to pull Bradley into the revolution.

After Ivan Boldyrev refused Governor Xiao Peng's demand for taxes, the governor called in the UN fleet to help enforce his edicts. When 15,000 armed soldiers marched to the commons in the center of the city, he found himself angry and more than a little afraid. Earth was actually landing troops on a colonial world. The freedom that he'd known since childhood suddenly looked to be in danger.

Deciding that he could not just stand by, Bradley Warner worked with those within Ivan Boldyrev's close circle to form up a militia unit. Given his past military experience, he was one of the best candidates and soon had 160 volunteers serving under him with the new milita rank of captain. For the next several years, he continued to work at the Herald during the day while training his troops at night, donning the red uniform of the independence movement.

Realizing that there was a large mix of opinions about independence even within his unit, Bradley chose leave politics at the door when training unlike other units that were half political organization and half military, the latter half always loosing out.

Thus, it was in 2172 that the men and women that served under him were among the best prepared for the First Republican Defensive. Taking the south side of the city, they set up roadblocks and positions on roof tops to block the invaders and make them fight from street to street. The tactic was followed by the other militia units and the UUHA soldiers found themselves harassed by a defense force they could rarely see and who have no ground.

Because of the success of defending Galileo City, Admiral Hugh Sims of the new Independent Fleet recruited Bradley to train the militia units of the whole of Galileo, appointing him to the rank of major within the organization. When the Independent Fleet was reorganized into the Republican Fleet, Bradley stayed with it. Hoping to get the command of a ship, Bradley transfered to the new Republican Airbase being built outside of Rayoville and began his training as a ship officer in preparation for serving aboard one of the new NOVA ships being constructed.

But when the Second Republican Defensive began in 2174, it was not a aboard a ship in which he took part of the fight but on the ground leading a unit of trained and hardened marines from the new Fourth Fleet. Employing many of the same tactics, he defended the town and pushed the invaders back to their ships, blowing them out of the air with anti-aircraft weaponry. It was a momentous achievement in a career that had already been extraordinary. While on Galileo he was hailed as a hero, it was his brother "Dutch" Warner who received the bulk of the acclaim through the rest of the Republic.

Fleet Career

Still, what really mattered was what the admiralty thought and in Bradley Warner, they knew they had a fine officer. In 2177, he was assigned as the senior operations officer aboard the Woodcutter, the very first NOVA ship to enter service. Just five years later, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and appointed as Executive Officer aboard the Columbus where he continued to serve with distinction.

By 2185, Bradley finally achieved what many in the Republican Fleet considered the pinacle of any career, command of a NOVA, in this case the Republican Defender, being her first and only master until 2200 through the events of the Battle for the Republic.

The Battle for the Republic began while Bradley and his brother Dutch were returning to Galileo from the Blue Line in a surprise attack by the UUHA. Serving under his higher ranking brother, Bradley was ordered to hide over the pole of the system's gas giant as a reserve force with Dutch lured the invasion force to him. When Dutch had the enemy engaged in battle, Bradley and the Varad Ranjani inched around the world and approached the UUHA from behind, forcing them to divide their force between the two Republican fronts.

It was a successful strategy that led to acclaim for both men but, since his brother was commanding the NOVA force, he again found himself overshadowed. That changed following Dutch's retirement in 2196. Being one of the few commanders from the Battle for the Republic still in the service, he was the logical choice for promotion, first rising the Rear Admiral of the Third Battle Group and then finally, at age 66, Admiral of the Second Fleet.

It was in this role that he truly defined himself separately from his brother. Pledging allegiance to the Republic before testifying before Congress each time he appeared, he became known for his testy hearings where he otherwise showed little patience for the oversight committee's lack of military knowledge. Still, it was because of him that every Fleet Admiral continues to recite the pledge.

Late Life

In 2214, at the insistence of his wife Shelly, Bradley Warner finally resigned from the Republican Fleet, retiring to the Galilean town of Rushing Bend at the age of 76. There, the elderly couple moved in with their only daughter and her family. It was described by Bradley as being the happiest time of his life. Unfortunately, the time was short and Shelly died just eight years later.

Her death spurred the famous admiral to return to a passion he'd given up long before and the following year he published a book about his wife, containing many of the love letters and poems that she had written him while he was away aboard his NOVA. Called The Wife I Wish I Knew Better, it was released to instant acclaim and remains on Athena Life's list of the 100 Most Important Books.

For the next eleven years, Bradley occupied himself almost exclusively with writing and, in that time, published six more books. Following his death in 2234 at the age of 96, his daughter subsequently released two more unfinished books that he had been working on at the time.

It is for this late-life writing that if people remember Bradley Warner in the Unified Republic of Stars, it is mostly as an author while his brother remains known as the most famous NOVA master. However, his personal journals seem to indicate that he was just fine with that.

Bradley Warner is buried next to his wife in the family cemetery on his daughter's property outside of Rushing Bend on Galileo.

  1. Galileo City, like many of the places within the Republic has no public educational system and the schools remain private. However, because of the competition to attract students, most of the schools were easily affordable by the parents who enrolled their children there. The New Literature & Sciences Day School was one of the most famous and well regarded schools in Galileo City.
