Athena is the single habitable planet within the Athena Star System. It orbits a main sequence yellow star not dissimilar to Earth's. The major city on Athena is Athena City with over 15 million inhabitants.
Discovery & Colonization
After the initial excitement of the discovery of Galileo, governments all over Earth soon began funding research vessels to make their own planetary discoveries. Star Cluster CL-27 seemed the reasonable place to return to as one planet had already been discovered, it was populated with stars not unlike Earth's, and physicists had predicted by the wobble of the stars that more planets remained to be found.
Toward the end of 2104, the British government funded a mission aboard a craft named the Beagle 3 to explore a star just three light years from Galileo. What they found they named Athena, for the Greek goddess and namesake of the Mediterranean Greek city of Athens. It seemed fitting given that the planet itself was little more than ocean with a few small strips of islands.
The explorers performed several weeks of survey and returned, disappointed by lack of apparent native life. Potential settlers, however, saw it as a permanent vacation from the troubles of Earth. A sandy beach and endless sea? Who could resist?
By the end of the year, it was estimated that Athena had just over 3,000 residents.
Life though was more hard fought than people initially thought. With most of the sea life sometimes as much as two hundred kilometers off shore, the new settlers were forced to improvise boats in order to fish for sustenance and with no plant life to speak of, there was no wood with which to build dwellings. So, for the first two years, most of what would become Athena City consisted of a series of shacks along the beach built from scraps of the disassembled vessels on which they arrived.
Fortunately, the owners of more than a few transport vessels saw a market in the making and before long trade routes between the other colony worlds were established allowing for the free exchange of goods. The quality of life increased almost immediately.
With the population having passed one million by 2113, space was already beginning to get tight, especially within Athena City where the bulk of new colonists chose to settle. Fortunately, because of the trade routes, both steel and glass was flowing in as quickly as construction crews could use them and buildings began to rise first five, then twenty, then fifty floors into the sky. Soon, most of the people who had settled on the planet because of the ocean couldn't even see it unless from the top of a skyscraper.
In 2115, the Colonial Central Bank was established and land was purchased in the center of the Athena city for the purpose of building a headquarters. When construction was completed in 2120, it was the highest tower on the planet, a distinction it held for only three years when a pair of residential towers surpassed it.
The first baseball league was established within Athena City in 2125, named simply the Athena League. It later merged with the Galileo league to form what was first called the Athena-Galileo League and, after the formation of the Republic, the Capitol League, with the original two league becoming divisions.
Timeline of Events on Athena
Because Athena had few raw products to sell, most of the goods bought and sold on Athena were imported. It's uncertain when except known that it was early in the development of the world but several enterprising businessmen began to over purchase goods from other worlds and line up sales for them on others. This was the beginning of the Athena Commodities Exchange and within a just a few years, almost every contract for goods at some point passed through Athena.
In addition, when the Central Bank of the Republic chose to base itself on Athena, no doubt because of the Commodities exchange, it sealed Athena's place as the financial center of the Republican Star Cluster.
In time, especially as the world matured, it became one of the largest producers of video entertainment, distributing its products throughout the star cluster and watched by millions.
In 2150, Kaesong Motors introduced the Z-Series motorcycles with a manufacturing facility within Athena City. The personal vehicles were instantly a hit, especially in the urban cities of Athena but also served city dwellers across the star cluster and continues to be one of the largest manufacturers on the planet.
Republican Baseball as it is now known was founded on Athena within Athena City with four original teams. Between 2130 and 2219 Athena based teams have made it to the Republican Series a total of thirty-six times, emerging as champion an astonishing twenty-two of those appearances.
Athenian teams play across two different leagues, the original Athena City teams playing in the Capitol League's Athena City Division while all but one of the other cities teams playing in the Independent League's Green Sea Division.

The climate of Athena is extremely stable, perhaps because of the orbit of a moon of almost equal size. The temperature can reach as high as 110 degrees Fahrenheit with decent humidity but almost never dips below 75 degrees. Winds are occasional and sometime variable but rarely more than a strong gust unless during the short winter months when they will bring a fair amount of rain.
The plate tehtonics on Athena appear to be mostly stable, accounting for the low amount of land above sea level. It is theorized that without the shifting of the plates to keep pushing land above the water, erosion has taken its course and washed most of it out to sea. As such, there exists only three major bodies of land on Athena, all of them little more than islands that had once been volcanic.
Because of the erosion, the seas have few variable temperature patches, thus preventing major storms from gathering. The warmest seas, however, tend to be around the islands where the water is shallowest and can extend for two hundred kilometers in every direction. This has led to some very comfortable beaches but with little animal life near shore.
The only cold areas appear at the poles where large ice caps dominate what landmass may be beneath, if any.
Native & Transplanted Life
Because of the low amount of actual landmass on Athena, most of the native life appears in the vast seas that cover most of the planet. Deep within the waters exists an entire ecosystem of plants and animals. All the life, however, seems to prefer the colder waters and very little of it comes near the shallows around the few landmasses, leading many early colonists to believe that the seas were without life. They couldn't have been more wrong.
Observers have seen leviathans of over two hundred meters long that appear to hunt in the deep but sun themselves on the surface. They would seem to be an entire ecosystem by themselves as the waters around them splash with life that either feeds off of them, their waste, or the remains of their food.
The second largest seen life form is a kind of shark, about a third of the length of the leviathans that appear to scoop up creatures around it with massive trap-like jaws.
Few water species transported from Earth have survived in the waters of Athena, in part because of the aggressiveness and size of the predators but also because of the rich amounts of oxygen within the water that tend to leave transplanted fish lethargic. This oxygen is created by micro lifeforms that absorb large amount of carbon from the water around them to create their microscopic cells and exchange it for oxygen.
If anything, the introduction of humans and a new source of carbon dioxide has increased this life and people new to Athena often describe a feeling of euphoria stepping off a ship into the oxygen rich environment.
Most species of Earth fauna survives well on Athena, provided they are planted in a proper nutrient rich soil. However, the early importation of palm trees by settlers to complete the picture of an island paradise was a marked success and they grow within the sandy soil with few issues.
There are no native birds or land creatures, owing no doubt to the limited landmass, but both pigeons and starlings were introduced and now populate the island cities in equal measure with humans.
